What is CIMS?

CIMS stands for the Change Impact Management System and is a tool that aims at helping IT teams track and manage the external changes that may have an impact on the IT environments (applications, IT infrastructures, etc.) that they own.

In this era of highly interconnected systems, one of the many challenges for the IT environment owner is to ensure they have a great control over the systems that they manage. They usually have a clear understanding of the current state of their environment. They also know what are the changes that are planned within their team/organization that will have an impact on their environment and a lot of tools exist to help them implement that aspect of the change management process. However it often happens that external changes (that is changes made to environments other than the one that is owned and controlled) have an impact on the environment. And the more dependencies the environment has the harder it gets to answer the questions:

• What are the external changes that may impact my environment?
• When are they due?
• Should we take any actions?

We usually have a clear understanding of changes implemented within our own environment but how to assess the impact of external changes thoroughly?

CIMS is designed to work alongside your current change management process (changes in your environment) as it helps you manage the impact of external changes (changes external to your environment that may have an impact on it). It aims at referencing in one single place all the external changes impacting the multiple environments in your organization and letting know the environment owners of changes that may impact them. CIMS can also be extended via an add-in system thus providing specialized tools for specific requirements (eg. the Reuters Data Extension designed specifically to manage the Reuters Data changes)…
